A young child excitedly watches as his father brings home a brand new Volkswagen Beetle. As he grows into a young man, the child learns to drive the Beetle with some help from his father, and finally takes it on the road, where he experiences the swinging 60s and falls in love with his future wife. The Beetle stays with the man through many phases of his life including raising his own children, until finally as an old man he bids the Beetle a fond farewell. The man is joined by his own childhood
